Week 1 assignments

    • WEEK 1: ASSIGNMENT #1:

1) Take some time to read this brief article (click on the purple words and it will open the article in a new window) about blogging for beginners. What you’re looking at is a blog about blogging by Darren Rowse. Click on some of the links. Read some of the responses by readers. (Just as you are able to comment on my posts here at MaxLighthouse.)

I learned that a blog is a from of a journal on the internet.

2. A blog is a updated every day and any one can comment on a blog.

3. Adding a article to the blog is called blogging.

Week 1; Assignment 2

  • 1) Find some blogs that deal with topics that interest you (keep it G / PG rated, please!) You can find them by going to Google and entering the word blog plus the topic you want to read about (for example comic-books, hip-hop, plastic-surgery, CGI, Portugal-history, stolen-elections — almost anything. Take some time to read and explore them.

2) Choose two blogs — one you really like and one that isn’t so great. Write three paragraphs about the blog you liked best. Write one paragraph about the other one. Why did you like the one that was your favorite? What did you find there? Why was it a better blog than the other one?

This blog is about the murder of Mac Dre. Mac Dre was a famous Bay Area rapper. Throughout Mac Dres career he made over ten records but he was only known throughout the underground hip-hip world. He was friends with E-40, Yukmouth, Keek-da-Sneak, Messy Marve, and to many other Bay Area rappers. He will always be remembered in the Bay as a rap legend.Mac Dre was killed in Kansas City, Missouri by a shouting and a car crash. According to police there were two men involved in the murder of Mac Dre. But they were never caught and arrested. It was unknown to the police and medical examiners whether or not it was the gunshot or the impact of the car crash that caused this young rappers death. To this day the police have still made no arrests or charges against those supposedly responsible for his death.I like this blog because Mac Dre is my favorite rapper in my eyes and many more of us here in the Bay Area. There is no one in the Bay or U.S. that can rap better than him in my opinion. Mac Dre had also done the things that I have done so I was able to relate to what he was rapping about in his songs. So it makes me upset that I will never be able to hear any of his new material or the things he comes up with again. And this is why I chose this blog. The blog I didn’t like was about everyone’s favorite food in the world…fast food. I don’t like fast food because they use very greasy and unhealthy ingredients in their products. Jack in the Box for example, most of their meat is made out of lard. On top of that their tacos aren’t even made of meat but fish. It is what is responsible for the obesity going on in this country. Thanks to it we are the fattest nation in the world.Week 1: Assignment 3

1. Using google.com, find some definitions of blog that explain the characteristics of a blog.  Is google a blog? Is YouTube? Is Answers.com? (No, no, and no. But they are three of my favorite websites.) WRITE a half-page explanation of what a blog is. Include particular characteristics that make a blog a blog.

2. Using google.com, some other search engine, or your own Internet favorites, find a blog you like and that you would re-visit every week or so. Write a paragraph about it telling what you like about it and be sure to include the URL. (The URL is the “address” of the website. For example, the URL for this site is http://maxlighthouse.edublogs.org/

The first definition of a blog that I ran upon is that it is a online diary. Also that they get updated every day. The other definition is that it is a website that people go to read about a subject they like or are interested in knowing more about. Blogs can also be known as an acronym finder meaning you can find any subject using blog. A blog can be a personal website or a group involvement that provides updated headlines and new articles of other sites that are of interests of the user. It can also be used as commentaries and recording of certain things. The blog that I chose will be one about the . Not the horses, the cars. Because when you come to this web page you can find anything about the 2000 to 2008 Mustangs. You could also buy any part to a Mustang. And they are constantly updating this blog. But the most interesting thing on this page in my opinion will have to be the ‘07 Saline because it comes with custom suspension, super charger, and other high performance parts. And they will tell you about the Mustangs that are still under development. So this will have to be my favorite blog./www.mustangheaven.com/

Have you ever had a nickname? Did your family have a particular name for you when you were little? Do your friends call you by a name other than the one you were born with? How did the name come about? Do you like it? What does it mean to you? Write a paragraph about your nick name. If you have never had a nickname, tell us about a nickname would be a good one for you, and why it would fit you.

Which is correctnickname, nick-name, or nick name? Find out and tell me. Also tell me the URL of where you got the answer.

The nickname I’ve had since the day I was born is Fatman. This is because when I was born I weighed 10 lbs and 4 oz. Everybody that knows me outside of school including family and friends calls me Fatman. I like it better than my real name because no one else I know has that name Fatman and it makes me stand out from everybody else even though I am no longer on the big side. To me it means that I have my own special category and I have never found it as an insult because Fatman is who I am. Assignment 5

Find a blog that is different from your culture, ethnicity, political point of view, etc. Write a one paragraph review of the Blog, and write one paragraph telling about something new you learned.

Check back tomorrow to see my Five Blog Day selections.

In China they have very different laws than us. Over in China you can only have one baby and if it isn’t a boy you can only have one more child. Also in China poverty occurs and is seen a lot more than the United States. In China the females are put under a tight belt and have a lot more restrictions than the males. From this blog I learned that China is a harder and harsher place to grow up in, especially if you’re a female.

Using Google, write a paragraph telling me who Clyde Tombaugh was. Why was he famous? Where did he grow up? What is the latest news about his great discovery?

Clyde Tombaugh was famous because he discovered the planet Pluto. Clyde Tombaugh passed away at the age of 91 on January 17, 1997. He was born on a farm near Streater, but he move to Burdett, Kansas. When he grew up he began going to night school. From there he went to Mexico to where he would become a great discoverer.

Go to one of the blogs I’ve listed, choose a post you find interesting and summarize it in one paragraph.

I found the blog “The Red State” more interesting to me than the other two. Because all of my family are democrats. And I remember my mom talking to me about how Clinton’s one of the best presidents the United States have ever had. I know that when Clinton was president I wasn’t really old enough to understand but now that Bush is president I’m able to understand now and all Bush did was make things cost more. He also wants to lower pay and make it harder for those who do not have as much money.

WEEK 2: ASSIGNMENT 1: By now your Blog should be up. That is a requirement. Do it.

WEEK 2: ASSIGNMENT 2: E-mail me the URL link to your blog. I will post it here along with the others so that everyone can check out everyone else’s blogs.

WEEK 2: ASSIGNMENT 3. Post your WEEK 1 ASSIGNMENTS on your Blog. Use the headline WEEK 1: ASSIGNMENTS. Be sure that your post includes the assignment as well as your answers/work.

WEEK 2:ASSIGNMENT 4. In your blog, post the following three writings about Signature Strengths:

Writing 1:

What are other “good things” about people — personality traits like  ”creative, wise, brave, honest, enthusiastic, kind, etc.” — qualities that make our lives better and which we can use to improve our happiness and success? We call these attributes “signature strengths.” List a few and — in your own words — explain what they mean.

What I think honest means. An honest person is someone that tells the truth and is never fake about who they are and never lies. Creative is a person that can come up with there own ideas and never needs to copy anybody. Brave is a person that can do anything they want no matter how hard it is.

Writing 2:

Think about a time in your life that you showed that you had one of these signature strengths. Think about it, remember what happened, what the circumstances were, what you did and why you did it. How did you feel about what you did, and what did it show you about yourself? Write a short essay (150 – 200 words) about this incident and what it showed you about one of your strengths.

I chose brave as my signature strength. Because most guys my age would have left and not try to take care of their kid. Because even the time that we were in the hospital and my girlfriend was in labor I stood by her side. Even as nervous as I was I stayed calm for her because I new if I paniced she would too.

Now that she is home with the baby. And he’s a bit older, I have a choice whether or not to come over when I want. And I come every day and take care of my son. I even sleep over at times because I know it’s the right thing to do. Besides I love my son and my girlfriend a lot. So that is the reason I chose brave because I stood up like a man and took responsibility for my actions. Plus, now I understand the way my parents worry about me so much. Because I can’t bear the pain of anything happening to my son.

Writing 3:

On your blog, tell what you consider to be your five signature strengths. Briefly give examples of the role that signature strength has played in your life.

My five strengths are honesty, brave, creative, wise, and kind. I’m brave because I never run away from anything. I’m honest no matter what it is. I never lie, I’m upfront about everything. I’m a creative person because I’m my own person and I never want to be or act like anyone else. I’m wise because I know when not to do something when it’s not right. I know the difference between right and wrong. And I’m kind because I’m never mean to the people I love or care about. These strengths played a great amount in my life because they help me make the right choices in life and shape the person that I am.

WEEK 3: Assignment #1

We’re reading the short story “Precious and Her Hair” by Ifeona Fulani. I have a copy for you when you come in for your appointment, or check the library for the book Beacon Best of 2000: Great Writing by Women and Men of All Colors and Cultures.

The story takes place in Jamaica, but the story’s point is universal — Jamaica or California, 2000 or 2006, female or male.

Ifeona Fulani, who was born in Jamaica, gave up a career in public administration for the literary life. She lives in New York, where she is a writer, teacher and doctoral candidate in the Department of Comparative Literature at New York University. Ifeona holds an MFA in Creative Writing and is the author of a novel, Seasons of Dust (Harlem River Press 1997), and numerous short stories, some of which have been published in Black Renaissances/Renaissance Noire, Best of 2000, and Small Axe.

WEEK 3: ASSIGNMENT #2

ASSIGNMENT: Learn about Positive Psychology, then create a blog post about what you’ve learned.

First, read this webpage: “What is Positive Psychology” This gives you the basic knowlege you need to begin further exploration. (If it still feels a little confusing, here’s a simpler essay. Try reading it, then going back and reading the first one.)

Then read this blog (and it’s a very good example of a blog.) Notice that he is blogging about things he has read. He provides quotes from and links to the sources he has read, and guides you to other websites where you can learn more. He ties it all together by telling you what he has learned and what he thinks. Your blog should do the same.

The blog above mentions three kinds of happiness in Positive Psychology. What are they? I didn’t think he did a great job of explaining them, so you need to do some googling. Remember, we’re looking at the ideas of happiness in Positive Psychology, not what Uncle Ned or the guy on the bus says happiness means — so your Google search must contain the phrase positive-psychology. Another good google phrase is Authentic-Happiness. After you’ve read more, explain the three types of happiness.

When you blog about what you’ve learned about three kinds of happiness, signature strengths and Positive Psychology, include quotes, links, referrences to other websites and your own learning and thoughts.

Go to http://blogsearch.google.com/ and find other blogs that discuss Positive Psychology. Do they also include quotes, links, referrences to other websites and their own learning and thoughts?

One of the links from the blog above led to this website, which I will definitely check out further– it lists the “Ben’s Top 11 Positive Psychology Internet Resources.” Maybe you could include a list of the sites you found the most informative, with a few sentences about why you found them them helpful. Check Ben’s site to see how he did it.

And one more thing:

If you haven’t taken the VIA Strength Survey for Children , DO IT! It’s not just for kids, and you don’t need a parent to register for you if you’re over 13 (although I would recommend sharing the results with your parents.)

Any questions about this assignment? Post them in the comments section.

Positive Psychology, what do you know? There is lot’s about it. Infact positive psychology can actually help make your life better as a person. There are three things to Positive Psychology, which can be used as a formula. The formula is pleasure plus engagement plus meaning equals happiness.

There is more then one type of happiness and it is called Authentic happiness. But difference between the two is Authentic Happiness is over a long period of time instead of just a few seconds or minutes. It’s more of a lifetime of happiness. My Authentic Happiness would be to spend my life with someone and what the doctors need to know is that everyone is different. Which means that everyone has a different happiness.

WEEK 3: ASSIGNMENT #3

Re-read “Precious and Her Hair.” This time, read it in terms of Positive Psychology.

  • Consider each of the significant characters in the story
  • What were their core strengths? Give examples to support your ideas.
  • What strengths were they NOT using? Did NOT using the strengths make their lives less happy or satisfying? Explain and, as always, give examples.
  • Did any characters change in the course of the story, perhaps improving in one of their strengths? Maybe a strength they were weak in became much stronger.
  • Which characters were living for which kinds of happiness?
  • If you were a counselor using your knowlege of Positive Psychology, what would you have told Precious?
  • How are your strengths similar to and different from Precious’s?
  • What else do you see in the story that relates to Positive Psychology?

Write a 300 - 350 word essay exploring these questions and ideas. State your ideas clearly, use examples and quotes from the story and from Positive Psychology sites on the Internet.

Enterprisers
Social Conservatives
Pro-Government Conservatives
Upbeats
Disaffecteds
Conservative Democrats
Disadvantaged Democrats
Liberals
Bystanders

  • Copy the full group description into your blog. (Not the part where it just repeats your test responses.)
  • To find out what your group thinks on various political issues, go to this page.
  • Write in your blog about your reaction to the description. Is it accurate? How are you similar to or different from your Typological Group. What issues are most important to you, and are issues you would consider in voting for a candidate or on a law?

Conservative Democrat

Based on your answers to the questionnaire, you most closely resemble survey respondents within the Conservative Democrat typology group. This does not mean that you necessarily fit every group characteristic or agree with the group on all issues.

Conservative Democrats represent 14 percent of the American public, and 15 percent of registered voters.

Basic Description
Conservative Democrats’ religious orientation and conservative views on many social and political issues set this group apart from the other Democratic-leaning groups, Liberals and Disadvantaged Democrats. Conservative Democrats’ views are moderate with respect to key policy issues such as foreign policy, regulation of the environment and the role of government in providing a social safety net. Their neutrality on assistance to the poor is linked, at least in part, to their belief in personal responsibility.

Defining Values
Less extreme on moral beliefs than core Republican groups, but most oppose gay marriage and the acceptance of homosexuality, and support a more active role for government in protecting morality. No more conservative than the national average on other social issues such as abortion and stem-cell research. Most oppose the war in Iraq, but views of America’s overall foreign policy are mixed and they are less opposed to Bush’s assertive stance than are other Democratic groups.

Who They Are
Older women and blacks make up a sizeable proportion of this group (27% and 30%, respectively). Somewhat less educated and poorer than the nation overall. Allegiance to the Democratic Party is quite strong (51% describe themselves as “strong” Democrats) but fully 85% describe themselves as either conservative or moderate ideologically.

Lifestyle Notes

46% attend church at least once a week, 44% attend Bible study or prayer group meetings, a third (34%) have a gun in their house.

2004 Election
Bush 14%, Kerry 65%.

Party ID
89% Democrat, 11% Independent/No Preference, 0% Republican,(98% Dem/Lean Dem)

Media Use
Emphasis on traditional providers as main news sources: newspapers (50%) and network TV news (42%).

Note: All descriptions and percentages are based on the national sample of adults surveyed by telephone in December.

In the overall typology there is a ninth group called “Bystanders” who are defined as adults who are not registered, who do not follow news about government and public affairs, and who say they rarely or never vote.

WEEK 4: ASSIGNMENT

  • Read the article above
  • Write a one paragraph response in the COMMENT section of this message
  • Show this article AND THIS BLOG http://maxlighthouse.edublogs.org to your parent/guardian

  • Show your parent/guardian YOUR BLOG so they can know what work you have (and have not) done.
  • I would love for parents/guardians to post THEIR comments here, too.

Assignment

I think the article is right. Because learning how to be independent is good because when most people go off by themselves they have no idea what to do and always have to ask for help. But for me personally, I am independent, I have no problem being and doing things by myself. So do I think independence is a good thing? Yes, and I think it is a good method of learning that a student can acquire.
